Tooling optimisation and automation open to great interest

HEDELIUS with 10% increase in visitors at EMO 2019

HEDELIUS Maschinenfabrik GmbH was once again able to record a decent increase in visitors at EMO 2019. Over the six days of the trade fair, 10% more visitors came to the stand than two years ago. "We are delighted that so many EMO visitors came to our stand again," says a satisfied HEDELIUS Managing Director Dennis Hempelmann. One reason for the high level of interest was certainly the products on display at the stand. In addition to the 3-axis machining centres from the Forte series, the two 5-axis series TILTENTA and ACURA machining centres were also presented, one of them with connected automation.

The structure and concept are convincing

The two 3-axis machining centres presented, the Forte 65 Single 1320 and Forte 85 Single 1620, impressed visitors to the trade fair with their compact and tidy design. All relevant components such as the control cabinet, central lubrication and cooling are accessible from the right-hand side of the machine. In addition, the two 3-axis machining centres impress with many details for convenient operating. These include the 65 or 80-position tool magazine that can be closed from the front during machining, the ergonomic work table height of 845 mm, the large viewing window in the work area door and the fully enclosed work area. However, when the door is opened, the cab roof also moves to the side, so that unrestricted crane loading is possible.

Automation is an important topic

The Forte machines are based on the ACURA machining centres, so it is clear that the 5-axis milling machines with rotating/swivelling table have the same advantages as their sisters from the 3-axis family. At EMO, visitors were able to see the ACURA 65 EL and ACURA 85 live under chip removal. The ACURA 85 came with a new spindle. With an output of 50 kW, a speed of 15,000 rpm and a torque of 217 Nm, various machining operations were demonstrated on a triple clamping pyramid, with a focus on high-performance milling, among other things.

The ACURA 65 EL had another highlight. It was connected to an automation system from BMO. The Platinum 50 robot system from the Dutch manufacturer loaded the ACURA 65 EL with small aluminium parts through the side loading opening, from which terminal boxes were then milled. Visitors were thus able to gain an impression of the interaction between automation and machine. What was also recognisable was that the ACURA 65 EL is loaded from the left-hand side of the machine, leaving the work area free for control and set-up work. "It was clearly closed that the trade fair visitors were interested in automation solutions," says Dennis Hempelmann. HEDELIUS will follow this trend and has taken the EMO as an opportunity to announce its own "Marathon" automation system. In future, customers will be able to obtain a machining centre and automation from a single source.

Continued strong interest in swivel head machines

Despite the great interest in automation solutions, the swivelling head machines of the TILTENTA series continued to be the focus of visitors. The TILTENTA 7-2600 could be seen live under chip removal, and the new, integrated fast rotary table with speeds of up to 50 min-1 met with particular interest. Many visitors were also impressed by the wide range of machining options offered by the TILTENTA 7-2600, but especially by the TILTENTA 9-2600. 2600 x 900 x 900 mm (x/y/z) travel paths and a 1250 mm interference circle of the integrated rotary table enable combined 5-axis and long bed machining. This flexibility makes the HEDELIUS swivelling head machining centres particularly valuable for mechanical engineering, contract manufacturing, special machine construction and many other industries.

More news

Advancing automation has long since arrived in mechanical engineering and contract manufacturing - but many companies still face challenges, especially when it comes to small batch sizes. While large-scale production is already largely automated today, flexibility in smaller quantities, which are often the order of the day in contract manufacturing, poses a particular challenge. How can automation be made to pay off here too without presenting machine operators with insurmountable hurdles?
